Taylor Swift surprised fans by announcing her 11th studio album, "The Tortured Poets Department," at the 2024 Grammy Awards on Sunday.

Swift shared details about the album, which she said was two years in the making, while accepting the award for best pop vocal album.

"I want to say thank you to the members of the Recording Academy for voting this way, but I know that the way that the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans," she said.

Swifties were shocked by the reveal; many believed Swift had been teasing an announcement for "Reputation (Taylor's Version)," rather than a brand-new album.

"The Tortured Poets Department" will be the follow-up to Swift's 2022 pop blockbuster "Midnights," which sold millions of copies and charted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for six weeks.

However, the verbose album title immediately reminded fans of her 2020 sister albums, "Folklore" and "Evermore," which saw Swift experimenting with fictional storytelling, folk-inspired production, and indie-rock collaborators.

Some people made jokes about the "Tumblr core" phrase, evoking everything from the Brooklyn neighborhood Bushwick to "Sex and the City" character Carrie Bradshaw.

Many fans began to share theories about the album's content, especially the implications of the word "tortured."

Swift split from her boyfriend of six years, Joe Alwyn, shortly after the release of "Midnights."

In May 2023, she released "You're Losing Me," a heart-wrenching breakup song that many speculated to be inspired by Alwyn. Swift's cowriter, Jack Antonoff, later revealed the song was written in December 2021 — around the same time Swift began working on "The Tortured Poets Department."

Others made note of the title's similarity to "The Tortured Man Club," the name of Alwyn's group chat with fellow actors Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott.

Some people made jokes about Swift's current boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce, who previously said he's "learning every day" from Swift because he's "never been a man of words."

In addition to her big announcement on Sunday, Swift won album of the year at the Grammys for "Midnights," becoming the first person in history to win the award four times.
