Long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad's story is back in the spotlight thanks to the Netflix biopic and awards season contender "Nyad."
Nyad is best known for being the first person to successfully swim 110 miles from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. She completed the feat at age 64 on September 2, 2013, after five attempts.
Nyad previouslyalleged that her swim coach, Jack Nelson, sexually abused her when she was 14 years old. She wrote about the effects of the alleged assault in a 2017 essay for the NY Times and said that she experienced "years of covert molestation." No charges were filed against Nelson, who died in 2014.
Nyad competed on season 18 of "Dancing With the Stars" in 2014. She was paired with professional dancer Henry Byalikov and got eliminated during week two of the competition.
Nyad's 2015 memoir 'Find a Way' inspired the Netflix biopic 'Nyad'
Nyad's memoir "Find a Way" was adapted into a feature film released on the streamer in early November, directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. "Nyad" stars Annette Bening as Nyad and Jodie Foster as Stoll. Both actors are nominated for awards at the upcoming Oscars.
Nyad has been supportive of the film during awards season, attending screenings with the cast and appearing at events like TheWrap's Power Women Summit.
