Coronavirus cases in India rise to 11,439, leaving almost 12% cured and 3.2% dead

• There are 9,756 active cases of COVID-19, 1306 individuals have recovered and discharged.
  
• Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state with a total number of positive cases rising to 2,687, followed by New Delhi with 1,561 cases.
  
• To prevent COVID-19 transmission, the state government prohibited spitting at public places in Himachal Pradesh.
  
• With nine new containment zones being announced in the national capital on Tuesday (April 14), the tally of COVID-19 red zones in the city has gone up to 56.
  

The total number of confirmed cases of Coronavirus in India is at 11,439, stated the data published by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday (April 15).

Of these, 9,756 are active cases of COVID-19, 1306 individuals have recovered and discharged, while one person migrated to another country. As many as 377 people succumbed to the disease.

Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state with a total number of positive cases rising to 2,687, followed by New Delhi with 1,561 cases and Tamil Nadu, which has reported 1,204 cases, according to the Health Ministry data.

At least 387 people are affected in Kerala, Uttar Pradesh reported 660 cases, Rajasthan reported 969 cases, Telangana reported 624 cases, and Andhra Pradesh reported 483.

Five new COVID-19 cases in Dharavi; slum area tally 60

Five more persons tested positive to coronavirus in Dharavi, taking the total number of cases in Mumbai's slum area to 60, a senior civic official said on Wednesday.

All the new patients - three males and two females - are from the Mukund Nagar locality of Dharavi. "Contact-tracing of high risk contacts of new patients is under progress," the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official said.

So far, seven COVID-19 patients from Dharavi have died.

Himachal bans spitting at public places

To prevent COVID-19 transmission, the state government prohibited spitting at public places in Himachal Pradesh, an official said on Wednesday(April 15).

Earlier, the state banned the sale and use of chewing gums till June 30. A statewide ban was imposed to check the possibility of transmission through spitting, Additional Chief Secretary (Health) RD Dhiman said.

Those found spitting will be booked under the Epidemic Disease Act and sections of the Indian Penal Code.

57 foreigners related to Jamaat in Bihar arrested

The Bihar government seems to tighten the grip over those who attended the congregation in Delhi's Nizamuddin Markaz, as 57 foreigners of different countries were arrested in Patna, Buxar, Kishanganj and Araria for violating visa rules.

According to the police, all the arrested were associated with Tablighi Jamaat. Eighteen have been arrested from Araria while 17 from Patna and 11 each from Kishanganj and Buxar. All of them tested negative for coronavirus.

Kishanganj Superintendent of Police Kumar Ashish said 10 Indonesians and one Malaysian were arrested from near the Khanka Mosque a few days ago. They were tested for coronavirus. However, they tested negative, but still, we kept them in quarantine in the Mosque itself. FIR has been lodged against them, and all of them were arrested on Tuesday (April 14), after their quarantine period was over, for violating visa rules.

With 126 new cases, Madhya Pradesh’s tally touches 741

Madhya Pradesh marked the end of the first phase of corona lockdown with a high of 126 positive cases on Tuesday (April 14). This took the total number in the state to 741, health officials said.

With three more COVID-19 deaths, the toll reached to 53 while 64 patients have recovered till now, the officials said. Indore reported two while one person succumbed to the virus in Bhopal.

The second phase of 19 days' lockdown could mean a long, arduous haul for recovery for both Indore and Bhopal -- the two hotspots in the state.

With 83 news corona positive cases recorded by Tuesday (April 14) evening, Indore touched 411 mark, said the health department officials. Bhopal's tally touched 158 with 16 new cases.

Of the 53 COVID-19 deaths in the state, 37 have been reported from Indore. Five people have died in Bhopal, six in Ujjain, three in Khargone while one each in Chhindwara and Dewas.

83 new cases in Jaipur take Rajasthan's tally past 1000-mark

Jaipur, on Tuesday (April 14), registered 83 new COVID-19 positive cases out of the 108 samples. This took the city's tally to 453 even as the total number of cases in Rajasthan surged to 1,005, Additional Chief Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh said.

Out of the 83 new cases which surfaced in Jaipur, 67 have been reported from Ramganj, Singh said, adding that new cases have also emerged from Raja Park and Kho Nagoriyan. Four cases have also been reported from Moti Doongri Road, he said.

Thirteen new cases were reported from Jodhpur, which took the city's tally to 95

Kota saw eight new cases, which took its tally to 57, while Jhalawar reported two new cases, taking the total number of cases in the city to 17. Jaisalmer and Jhunjhunu reported one case, taking their tally to 30 and 32, respectively.

Andhra Pradesh tally touches 483 forcing government to hire contract doctors

Andhra Pradesh added ten more coronavirus cases in the course of the day, taking the state's tally to 483 on Tuesday (April 14). The state witnessed one of its highest jumps in COVID-19 cases when 37 persons tested positive on Tuesday (April 14) morning.

The state nodal officer during the briefing said that five cases from Guntur district, three cases from Anantapur and two cases from Kadapa district were detected.

With 16 persons discharged so far, the number of persons currently in the hospital for treatment stands at 459. The death toll in AP due to COVID-19 is 11 — three persons in Krishna district, two persons in Anantapur, two persons in Guntur and one person each in Kurnool and Nellore districts.

Guntur, with 112 cases, has witnessed the highest number of coronavirus cases followed by Kurnool at 90 and Nellore at 56.

Meanwhile, the state government has started a COVID-19 special recruitment drive and issued a notification inviting applications for contractual posting as specialists and general duty medical officers in government general hospitals and district hospitals.

Migrants want 'ghar-wapasi' as Maha slams Centre

An aghast nation watched more than 3,000 hungry and angry migrant clamouring to go home at Bandra yesterday (April 14). After this, a mud-slinging match erupted between the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government and the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday (April 14).

The migrants, including many women and children, gathered near Bandra in the hope of getting a meal and then catching a train back home. This was hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended the national lockdown till May 3 - three days more than Maharashtra's shutdown till April 30.

The migrants staged a dharna demanding transportation back home, and others started running around, compelling the police to cane them mildly. After around two hours, Mumbai Police Spokesperson and DCP Pranay Ashok said they had been dispersed, and the situation was under control.

The police were taken completely unawares by the hordes, which came in small trickles from different directions, pointing to a potential intelligence failure, flouting prohibitory orders and throwing to the winds "social distancing" norms, barely 2 km from the residence of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Nine more containment zones in Delhi; total 56

With nine new containment zones being announced in the national capital on Tuesday (April 14), the number of red zones in the city went up to 56.

Containment zones, also known as red zones, are the areas sealed by the district administration following the surfacing of at least three coronavirus cases from the localities. Till Monday (April 13), there were 47 red zones across the city.

The nine new containment zones include two each in South, South-East and Central districts, and one each in South West, North and North-East Delhi, according to the list shared by the Delhi government. Check out the detailed list here.
