India is the fourth least happy country in a year of lockdowns, deaths and work from home

  • India ranks fourth from the bottom in the latest World Happiness Report.
  • The only countries to rank lower than India were Jordan, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.
  • Here’s a full list of the top 10 unhappiest countries in the world.
India is the fourth-least happy country in the world, according to the latest results of the World Happiness Report. The only countries ranked lower than India were Jordan, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.

Finland, on the other hand, maintained its lead at the top of the charts. According to the report, the rankings have not changed too much year-on-year despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

“One possible explanation is that people see COVID-19 as a common, outside threat affecting everybody and that this has generated a greater sense of solidarity and fellow-feeling,” said Canadian economist John Helliwell in a statement.

Happiness has been a true challenge, not just for governments around the world, but also at an individual level. Sleep anxiety has been on the rise, trust deficits have increased and day-to-day routines have seen a shake down.

“This has been a very challenging year, but the early data also show some notable signs of resilience in feelings of social connect and life evaluation,” said Lara Aknin, a Canadian social psychologist who currently teaches at the Simon Fraser University.
