A project of Tim Siadatan and Jordan Frieda, who also run the North London Italian favourite Trullo, Borough Market's Padella runs on a no bookings basis, meaning there's almost always a queue.
However, it's more than worth the wait – the Pappardelle with Italian fennel sausage ragu, £8.50, appears to be the hit, and has become an Instagram favourite.
Upstairs, the seating is sleek but informal, with diners either watching the chefs in action at the kitchen bar or sitting at stylish high-top marble counters.
There are tables and a second bar downstairs, however, so the queue moves fairly quickly.
The drinks menu features Aperitivi like the Negroni, £6, or the Spritz, £6.50, with beer and wine on tap – even the wine is cheap, starting from £3.50 a glass or £14 for a carafe. You can also bring your own wine for £10 per bottle.
The pasta dishes, freshly prepared every day with sauces and fillings, are inspired by Siadatan and Frieda's trips to Italy. However, Siadatan, 33, learned to make pasta much before – he was one of the original graduates from Jamie Oliver's Fifteen, and was taught the skill by the Naked Chef himself.
“We’ve travelled all over Italy, through people’s kitchens as well as it’s most famous pasta restaurants, and having rolled enough pappardelle to get to Rome and back, Padella will serve the absolute Don Daddies from our 10 year love affair with Italy’s most famous dish," the website claims.
Warm up your stomach with some sourdough bread and melt-in-your-mouth burrata with Puglian olive oil for £5. When it's time for pasta, stracci with pesto, £6, and taglierini with slow cooked tomato sauce, £5.50, are among the must try dishes.
If you can, save a bit of room for Pudding – Affogato, vanilla ice cream topped with a shot of espresso, is the perfect way to end your meal. But with pasta this good – and this cheap – you could also just order a second plate.
