Illinois police charged a US Army member after bowling alley shooting killed 3 people

• A gunman opened fire in an Illinois bowling alley on Saturday night, killing three people and injuring three others.
• The Rockford Police Department said in a tweet late Saturday officers had taken a 37-year-old white male into custody as a suspect in the shooting.

Police identified the gunman who opened fire in a bowling alley Saturday night in Rockford, Illinois.

A 37-year-old white male suspect was taken into custody after the shooting, the Rockford Police Department said in a tweet late Saturday. In a Sunday morning press conference, Rockford Police Chief Dan O'Shea identified the accused suspect as Duke Webb of Florida.

Webb, who is active duty with the US Army, is facing charges; three counts of first-degree attempted murder and three counts of murder charges, Winnebago County State's Attorney, J. Hanley said.

O'Shea previously told reporters that three people died and an additional three people were injured by the gunfire and were being treated at a local hospital.

Of those wounded, one victim, 62, is in critical condition after being shot multiple times. A 14-year-old is in stable condition after being struck in the face, and another victim, 16, who was shot in the shoulder was discharged from a local hospital after being treated for her injuries, Chief O'Shea said.

O'Shea said authorities received multiple 911 calls around 6:55 p.m. CST reporting shots fired at Don Carter Lanes.

The gunman was still in the building when officers arrived, O'Shea said, adding that it doesn't appear that any officers fired their weapons. In addition, Webb tried to hide his identity and weapons from the officers prior to his arrest.

He added that the investigation was ongoing and that the owners of the bowling alley were cooperating with police officers.

During the press conference, O'Shea also said that the incident was captured on video from inside the establishment.

Journalists from the Rockford Register Star posted photos and videos on Twitter showing the bowling alley blocked off by police tape and surrounded by officers and police cruisers.

"The entire bowling community mourns the senseless loss of life and prays for the families," Don Carter Lanes wrote in a Facebook post early Sunday morning."God, please be with their friends and families."
