Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party appointed an Indian origin woman, Tamkeen Shaikh for Barking constituency

She left India 14 years back for a Masters in media and management in the UK and is now working in the education sector.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party appointed an Indian origin woman, Tamkeen Shaikh, as a candidate for Barking constituency. Shaikh was born and raised in Ahmedabad, will be contesting for the December 12 UK elections.

She left India 14 years back for a Masters in media and management in the UK and is now working in the education sector.

"Here the Parliament is pushing to have 50:50 representation of men and women and are encouraging women on a wider scale to get involved in politics. If elected, my priority is to draw more investments in school, social enterprise, youth engagement, building family homes and care for the elderly," Shaikh said.

She joined the Conservation Party with a belief to contribute to the society and to create opportunities for business and innovation.

She promised to invest in the National Health Service, put more police on Barking’s streets, and provide funds to schools. Her main poll promise however is help Johnson who is promising to “get done with Brexit”.

As many as 1.4 million Indian live in the UK. British Indians are the single largest visible ethnic minority in the country. “Indians are a large economic contributors in the UK and continue to do so. Indian community has integrated well within the community and are making huge progress in all sectors," Shaikh said.
