Indonesia is trying to find a missing navy submarine that had 53 people on board.

The submarine went missing during a torpedo drill north of the island of Bali, a Navy spokesman told Reuters on Wednesday. They said the submarine failed to relay results as expected.

The country's military chief, Hadi Tjahjanto, told Reuters that with the submarine was lost at 4:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

"We are still searching in the waters of Bali, 60 miles from Bali, [for] 53 people," he told the agency via text message.

He also said he wanted help from Australia and Singapore to find the submarine. Australia and Singapore's defense departments did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.
