Authorities at a California military base responded to reports of an active shooter Tuesday morning.

The US Marine Corps said in a statement on Twitter Tuesday that it was "aware" of reports of an active shooter at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Training Center - Twentynine Palms, adding in a follow-up tweet that military police first responded to reported gunshots in the area at around 6:30 a.m. local time.

Capt. Nicole Plymale, a public affairs officer at the base, told Fox News that authorities cornered the suspect in a cordoned off area of the base and were in contact with the individual.

In a later update, the Corps said that an individual suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound at around 8:30 a.m. local time and is being moved to a local medical facility for treatment. No other injuries have been reported.

A shelter-in-place order that was in effect for the base has since been lifted, and the incident is under investigation.
