At least 82 people are dead after oxygen tanks exploded and caused a massive fire at a Baghdad hospital on Saturday, The Washington Post reported.

The fire broke out at the Ibn al-Khatib hospital, where severe coronavirus patients were being treated in the intensive care unit.

Major General Kadhim Bohan said the fire has been put out, Reuters reported.

A doctor told the Associated Press that 120 patients were in the hospital at the time of the fire.

The Post reported that 110 people were injured in the flames.

"I don't know how many victims there are, there are so many burned bodies all over the place," Dr. Sabah al-Kuzaie told the AP.

Reuters reported that ambulances rushed to get injured patients to safety. Patients not injured were transferred to other hospitals.

The incident renewed anger at the mismanagement of the country's health system and corruption, the Post reported.

The blaze is thought to have started due to a pile of haphazardly stored oxygen cylinders. It spread quickly since the hospital had no sprinklers or smoke detectors, Maj. Gen. Kadhim Bohan, a spokesman for Iraq's civil defense force said.

Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi suspended top health officials and said an investigation has been launched, the Post reported. Al-Kadhimi also declared three days of national mourning.
