"This rule of not allowing wives and girlfriends was always there in the past. In a big tournament like the World Cup, the cricketers should stay away from distractions," a top BCCI official told Times of India.
Wives and girlfriends accompanying sportsmen has always been a topic of debate, with some opposing it while citing distraction and others citing them as a ‘stress buster’ and ‘motivation’ to perform better. Talking of Indian Cricket Team, we usually spot wives and girlfriends of the team members on international tours, but this being the World Cup in which we have to defend the title of world champions, the authorities don’t want the players to lose focus.
WAGS or no WAGS, all we hope for are good performances. Personally, what the players do outside the ground is not something that the board should have a say on. However, talking of the flight and room fares, it has an authority to control that, which seems fair. Talking of the recent past, while Anushka’s presence was blamed for Virat’s poor performance in England, his smashing form in Australia was also witnessed by Anushka from the stands. So, there is no concrete way in which we can say whether your loved one’s presence is a distraction or a motivation. Therefore, cutting them some slack, they should be allowed to meet and interact with their girlfriends and wives in their free time.
