PC sales haven't been this bad since 2007, and Apple is seeing a big Mac slump
The reasoning, per that report: There's a shortage of components like memory and LCD screens, driving prices up. While some vendors just absorbed the higher costs, others hiked their PC prices, leading to lower overall demand.
That slump hit Asus hardest, seeing a 40.1% dip in its share of the market last quarter, compared with the same period in 2016.
But Apple and its Mac computer lineup took some lumps, too. The Mac's share of PC sales last quarter was down 9.6% over the same period a year ago.
It wasn't all bad news, though. HP saw its market share zip up 6.5% over the same period, marking five straight quarters of such growth.
Finally, while Gartner doesn't track sales of Apple iPads or Google's low-cost Chromebook laptops - reasoning that they don't compete for the same users as the mainstream PC - the firm does say that Chromebooks are growing like crazy. In 2016, Chromebooks grew 38%, far outpacing the 6% shrinkage of the overall PC market, it says.
