With the term of the present Vidhan Sabha in Delhi concluding on 22 February 2020, fresh elections will be announced to select the next government that will rule the capital state for the next five year term. Shakur Basti will see the assembly polls in February 2020 along with the other 69 constituencies of Delhi. Shakur Basti falls within the jurisdiction of Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha constituency. There are 147216 electors who will cast their votes in this constituency and among them 75911 are males, 71304 are females and 1 is from third gender.

The last assembly elections in Shakur Basti was held in 2015. During this election, AAP’s Satyendar Jain bagged 51530 votes and was announced as the winner. The runner up in this election was S C Vats of the BJP. He received 48397 votes. Satyendar Jain won from this seat two times in 2013 and 2015 assembly elections. Both these times, he defeated BJP candidates and went to the assembly. Earlier, S C Vats was elected for the assembly two times consecutively from this seat in 1998 and 2003. In both these elections, he represented the INC. In 2008 elections, BJP’s Shyam Lal Garg won this seat and remained in office for a full five year term.

Shakur Basti is a general seat open for all contestants. The 51530 votes scored by Satyendar Jain of AAP in 2015 elections was the highest a candidate has ever scored from this assembly seat.
