Sen. Bernie Sanders raised $34.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2019, receiving over 1.8 million donations with an average donation of $18.53, his 2020 campaign announced on Thursday.

Sanders has raised over $96 million since he launched his campaign in February, and his haul for the fourth quarter is higher than any other 2020 Democrat has raised in a single quarter in the race thus far. The campaign said it received contributions from 40,000 new donors on the final day of the quarter.

The Vermont senator on Wednesday said his campaign has received 5 million individual contributions, which he said was "more contributions than any campaign has received at this point in a presidential election in the history of our country."

"Now I am proud to say that ours is the only campaign in this Democratic primary with more donations than Donald Trump," Sanders said in an email to supporters.

Comparatively, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg's campaign on Wednesday said it raised $24.7 million in the final quarter of 2019, bring his total haul in 2019 to $76 million. Tech entrepreneur Andrew Yang's campaign said he raised $16.5 million in the fourth quarter - a huge leap from the $9.9 million it raised in the previous quarter.

Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, other top-tier candidates, have not yet released fourth quarter fundraising numbers.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump's reelection campaign counties to outpace 2020 Democrats in fundraising, bringing in $46 million in the fourth quarter. Trump's campaign said it had $102.7 million cash on hand heading into the new year, and raised a total of $143 million in 2019.
