Tamil Nadu and capital city Chennai were on ‘red alert’ on November 10 due to extreme heavy rainfall in the past few days. Flood warnings have been issued today in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai as the water level of Vaigai dam has passed the reservoir capacity of 71, reportedly.
According to news agency ANI,14 people had died and at least 530 houses or huts were severely damaged, while more than 1,700 people were in relief camps on November 10. “In the last four days, almost 20 lakh people have been given food packets in Chennai”, said Kumar Jayant, Principal Secretary of Revenue Department in a statement.
Several areas in Chennai including Nungambakkam high road, Kodambakkam and Vadapallani witnessed power-cuts due to extreme water-logging.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) withdrew the ‘red alert’ yesterday, i.e November 11 for eight districts — Chennai, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore, Salem, Kallakurichi, Tirupattur and Tiruvannamalai as the depression which caused this extreme rainfall in Tamil Nadu had begun to cross the coast between Chennai and Puducherry.
