Diseases deadlier than COVID-19 are already in the making — here are the top ten candidates that could cause the next pandemic

  • The man who discovered the Ebola virus, Jean-Jacques Muyembe Tamfun, believes that there’s a high chance of diseases deadlier than COVID-19 breaking out in the future.
  • According to him, the next ‘Disease X’ is most likely to arise out of the African tropical rainforests.
  • Here are the top 10 contenders of diseases that could cause the next pandemic if they aren’t stopped in their tracks.
COVID-19 was a wake-up call for the world to be more vigilant about viral bugs that could turn the switch on society in an instant. According to Jean-Jacques Muyembe Tamfun, the scientist who discovered Ebola, humanity currently faces even deadlier threats — signs of which are already emerging in African tropical rainforests.

“We are now in a world where new pathogens will come out. And that’s what constitutes a threat for humanity,” he told CNN. When asked if any new disease could be more apocalyptic than COVID-19, he said, “Yes, yes, I think so,” warning that many more zoonotic diseases — those that jump from animals to humans — could arise.

COVID-19 is only the most recent.among those diseases. Yellow fever, various forms of influenza, rabies, brucellosis, and Lyme disease have been around for a lot longer. And, they've been the root cause of epidemics and pandemics in the past.

The World Health Organisation has dubbed these unknown disasters waiting to happen as ‘Disease X’ — where the ‘X’ stands for the unexpected. And, according to Tamfun, a woman showing symptoms of hemorrhagic fever in a remote town in the Democratic Republic of the Congo could have been patient zero for ‘Disease X’.

She was tested for several diseases, which are already known but tested negative for every single one. This has sparked fears that her illness could be caused by an ‘unexpected’ pathogen that spreads as quickly as COVID-19 but has a deadlier fatality rate of 50% to 90% —- at par with Ebola. Luckily, she has since recovered, but the cause of her illness is still unknown.

But, another unexpected pathogen could be around the corner to cause the next ‘Disease X’.

According to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) Alliance, these are the top 10 most likely infectious disease that could be the next pandemic:
