Freak dismissals in international cricket – From Mathew’s Timed Out to Sachin's runout
Angelo Mathews became the first cricketer to be timed out in international cricket during the ongoing World Cup 2023 while playing against Bangladesh. The decision has become highly debated and talked about. Over the years, there have been several unusual or freak dismissals in international cricket, from Vinoo Mankad running out the non-striker for backing up too much in 1947 to Sachin Tendulkar getting runout at the Eden Gardens after being pushed by Shoaib Akhtar while attempting to reach the crease.

Angelo Mathews’ name will go down in the books as the first player to be timed out in international cricket. Mathews was timed out while he was waiting for a helmet replacement after his helmet’s strap broke even before he could face the first ball. Mathews claims he was given out before the specified period of two minutes and has criticised Shakib Al Hasan for the appeal.

New Zealand’s Henry Nicholls was dismissed in a bizarre way during the third test against New Zealand in June 2023 when the ball hit the non-striker’s bat and was caught by Alex Lees at mid-off. Nicholls scored 19 runs in 99 balls during the innings.

Australia’s Bill Brown was the non-striker batsman to be run out for backing up too far. Brown was run out by India’s Vinoo Mankad in December 1947 giving rise to the term ‘Mankading’. Brown had stepped out of the crease before the ball was bowled and became the first victim of this kind. This became popular again after Ravichandran Ashwin used it to get Jos Buttler out in an IPL match between KXIP and RR.

Sachin Tendulkar was run out against Pakistan at the Eden Gardens in the Asian Test Championship in 1999. While coming back for a third, Sachin bumped into Shoaib Akhtar who was fielding and trying to receive the ball. Sachin had made his ground but due to the impact with Akhtar the bat went up in the air when the stumps were hit.
