Stephanie Meyer has re-written 'Twilight' with Bella and Edward's genders swapped
In a new 442-page book, titled "Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined," available on Tuesday, Bella Swan is a guy named Beaufort (or Beau for short) and irresistible vampire Edward Cullen is a girl named Edythe.
"There's another story," Meyer explained on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Tuesday. "I mean, it's the same story. but it is a new version of it."
Meyer said she wanted to do "something fun" for the 10th anniversary. And although the publisher asked Meyer for a forward, the writer came up with a new novel. While Meyer says the novel is "the same story," she says it does begin to differ more and more from the original "Twilight" as the story moves on.
"It's just a love story and it doesn't matter who's the boy and who's the girl, it still works out," the author said.
Meyer re-wrote the story after hearing Bella referred to as the "damsel in distress," which bothered the author.
She hopes for two things. First, she'd like to see if people see Bella in a new light after reading her as a boy. And second, she hopes the novel will re-introduce new readers to the series. That said, she doesn't have plans to do more books starring Beau and Edythe.
Released in 2005, it would take three years in 2008 before it became the bestselling book of the year. It would then be made into a film in 2008 starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson that grossed $392 million worldwide. It would be followed by three sequels.
