Logistically speaking, here’s how technology will help in getting your package delivered super fast and it has nothing to do with drones

Right now you can check the status of you delivery through different stages your package is at, mainly telling you about your order being accepted by seller, to being shipped to getting delivered and that’s about it. But soon you could be able be track your delivery real time on a map. E-tailers should be able to show real time tracking of shipments not only on land, but also in air as well.

The logistics industry is already abuzz with IoT devices that can travel with your package and tell you the exact condition of your package. Soon you should be able to log on to a site or download an app to find out the exact temperature, humidity, dust level, sunshine and much more that your package is met with while on its way, thanks to the IoT device.

All major e-commerce players are working on making deliveries convenient for consumers. E-tailers are already working on 90mins delivery, or exact time delivery. In terms of making quick deliveries e-commerce platforms will also look at tying up with shops as their pick-up spot in order to make deliveries faster, for eg. some e-commerce sites already have grocery stores working as their pick-up points. We could also have digital storage lockers in future where you can access the storage locker by entering the OTP on your phone.

Machine learning is the future. AI can be used for Shipment Routing System where the system gets smarter with every new shipment and rating. It uses parameters like, coverage, duration, cost, partner rating, historical average duration for that route and even accounts for holidays, to choose a partner. Through deep analytics e-tailers can see how many shipments they send to a particular pincode, city and country on a map. AI can help them view efficiency reports and know how quickly packages have been delivered or if there are any delays.

While you will be seeing a lot more advances in the logistic sector in the near future, however ‘delivery drones’ still have a long way to go.
