Apple added dark mode to the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch in 2019. When you turn on dark mode, dozens of apps will change colors. And depending on what kind of background you have on your lock and home screen, it might change colors too. You can even set dark mode to turn on and off automatically, based on the time of day.
Here's how to turn on dark mode on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. Just note that your iPhone or iPod will need to be running iOS 13 or newer, and your iPad will need iPadOS 13 or newer.
How to turn on dark mode on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch
- Go to the Settings app.
Scroll down, then tap "Display & Brightness."
Under "Appearance," tap "Dark." Here, you'll see a small preview of what light and dark mode will look like on your screen.
You can also use this menu to schedule dark mode. This will let it come on and off automatically, based on the time of day.
How to make dark mode turn on and off automatically
- Go to the Settings app on your device, then tap "Display & Brightness."
Tap the "Automatic" slider to turn it on.
Tap "Options" to schedule when your phone transitions from light to dark mode. The default option is "Sunset to Sunrise," but you can also set a custom schedule.
Lastly, you can add a shortcut to your device's Control Center that lets you switch dark mode on and off with just a tap.
How to turn on dark mode from Control Center
- Open the Settings app and tap Control Center.
- Scroll down to find a list of all the controls you can add to the Control Center. It'll be separated into two sections, "Included Controls" and "More Controls."
When you find "Dark Mode," tap the plus sign on its left side and drag it to the "Included Controls" section.
You can now turn dark mode on or off from the Control Center.- Open the Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen (on an iPad or iPhone X and later models) or swiping up from the bottom of the screen (for an iPhone SE, iPod touch, and iPhone 8 and earlier models).
