In the run-up to Christmas, there's nothing better than taking in the season's atmosphere, picking up few gifts and sipping mulled wine at a Christmas market, especially when you can combine the experience with a weekend city break.

Post Office Travel Money's annual Christmas Markets Barometer, released this week, shows the cheapest European cities to do just that this winter.

By comparing prices of food and drink, travel, and accommodation in cities across Europe, the Barometer revealed that for the best deals, travellers should head to the Baltics this season, with the winning city of Tallinn coming in a third cheaper than the most expensive in the survey, Stockholm.

This number is 4% cheaper than a year ago, despite the weakened pound, as local prices in Tallinn have fallen by 10%.

Ranked from most expensive to cheapest, check out the list of the best European cities to head to for seasonal fun this year, along with a breakdown of expenses, below.
