Salt Lake City will be building a tiny home village to test the "tiny home model" that's now being used in other cities as an alternative to congregate shelters.

Several cities across the US have begun creating tiny home villages to address the growing homelessness crisis.

This includes Los Angeles, which recently opened two villages this year in North Hollywood with plans to open two more by the end of 2021.

Salt Lake City will be partnering with the Other Side Academy - a nonprofit dedicated to helping and housing people who were formerly incarcerated, unhoused, or substance users - to create the Other Side Village.

The village will have between 400 to 500 homes with kitchens and bathrooms. The homes will then about 400 square-feet, ABC 4 reported, much bigger than Los Angeles' 64-square-foot units.

The tiny homes will be sectioned off into different neighborhoods that will all surround the "village center."

However, the village will be more than just clusters of little homes.

It'll also have other amenities to create a more social environment.

It's important to have a "social system" and community built around the tiny homes, Joseph Grenny, chair and founder of The Other Side Academy, said in the press release.

"The most important part is to create an environment, socially and physically, that facilitates connection with others," Greeny said. "Homelessness is the result of a catastrophic loss of family, so the solution must be to build a new family."

To create this community feel, the village will have communal spaces that surround these neighborhoods, including a garden, dog park, and community center, according to renderings of the village.

There will also be a downtown area, shops, a chapel, and sections for Airbnb rentals.

The goal is to have the Other Side Village running by this winter.

To do this, Salt Lake City is now moving at "light-speed" to create the village, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said in the press release.
