This is how Britain’s election result impacts Indian foreign affairs

Jun 10, 2017, 12:58 IST
The recently concluded election in Britain has resulted in a hung parliament with Prime Minister Theresa May failing to achieve an absolute majority. While this indicates a major chaos in the UK, India is equally confused now about its decision to separate its Europe policy from its UK policy.

This is greatly because May, who was in favour of a hard Brexit may require to team up with Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to reach the magic number to form the government. As indicated by a TOI report, DUP is more relaxed on immigration as it wants to avoid a hard border with Ireland.

This would complicate EU negotiations. While the main agenda of Brexit is to stop free flow of Europeans through the border into UK and to prevent Brussels from taking shots in London, this soft sightedness of Brexit would now put India in a fix. Earlier New Delhi was on a level playing with the European nations.

On June 19, the first talks on Brexit is scheduled to happen and India would need to wait and watch what it’s relation shapes like in the UK after the new government forms.
