life05:10New Jersey's iconic sloppy joe is made with Russian dressing and cold cutsIn most parts of the country, a sloppy joe is made with ground beef and a tomato-based sauce, served on ...a hamburger bun. But in parts of New Jersey, a sloppy joe is something else entirely: a sandwich with two types of cold cuts, Swiss cheese, coleslaw, and Russian dressing, served between thin double-decker rye bread. Though dozens of places serve it, Town Hall Deli in South Orange claims to be the first restaurant in New Jersey to make this version of the sloppy joe in 1935. The deli still serves the original recipe with cow tongue, but the most popular sloppy joe on the menu is The Favorite, made with roast beef and turkey.
