The Nifty had a flat opening on Friday as traders stayed away from long positions ahead of the weekend and even as cues from overseas markets remained bland.

The Nifty was down 20 points at 8,569 in initial trades. Losers were lead by Wipro, GAIL, ICICI Bank and M&M, while the gainers list included Bank of Baroda, Lupin, TCS and Bajaj Auto. Lupin and Axis Bank counters were the most active on the Nifty, whose Advance-Decline ratio stood at 20/30.

On the Bombay Stock Exchange, the Sensex showed a similar trend, quoting 67 points lower at 28,303. Its Advance-Decline ratio stood at 13/17 with Tata Motors, State Bank of India and NTPC struggling in the red versus Hindalco, Axis Bank and Dr. Reddy's that rose in early deals.

But the broader market was dominated by the bulls with 1,510 shares gaining ground compared with 1,326 that fell on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

However, the mood was bearish on the Futures and Options space with 66 Futures advancing compared with 92 that fell. Biocon, Dewan Housing and Wockhardt Pharma Futures were the top gainers, while futures in the telecom, textiles and fertiliser space showed positive traction.

Bears consolidated their grip on companies that gave disappointing earnings after market closed yesterday. Hence, shares like Wipro and GAIL came under selling pressure.
