The Nifty had a strong start on Wednesday as traders ramped up beaten down metal stocks as also Bharti Airtel after the telecom giant's stellar first quarter earnings that beat estimates.

The Nifty surged 61 points to 8,577. The Advance-Decline Ratio was at 42/8 with Tata Steel, Bharti, Vedants and Lupin taking the first four top spots on the Nifty's gainers list. On the losers' side of the index were Asian Paints, GAIL and Mahindra and Mahindra on the Index.

Broader indices were upbeat too. Major gains were seen in the CNX 100, CNX 200 and CNX 500 Indexes. The Bank Nifty edged up in initial trades. Sectoral indices such as CNX Metal, CNX IT and CNX Energy posted smart upticks.

And on the Bombay Stock Exchange, the Sensex jumped 183 points to 28,254 points in initial trades on Wednesday. As a consequence, the Advance-Decline Ratio stood at 24/6. Hindalco, Cipla and Hero Motors were among the top gainers on the Sensex versus GAIL, Maruti and Hindustan Unilever that lost ground on the Index.

The markets were intensely bullish in the futures and options space with Adani Enterprises, Sun TV, SAIL and Union Bank being on top of the gainers’ list versus Hexaware, Arvind, Asian Paints that dropped over their previous close. The Advance-Decline Ratio, meanwhile, stood at 121:38

The broader market, too, was dominated by the bulls in the first half hour of trade with 1,666 shares rising compared with 1,285 that fell.
