The Dallas Cowboys announced on Saturday that Tony Romo broke a bone in his back when he was tackled from behind in the team's preseason game on Thursday against the Seattle Seahawks.
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said (vis ESPN) the team is not ruling out Romo for the season opener in two weeks. However, others are reporting that Romo will miss a significant chunk of the regular season.
A source for Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk says Romo is "expected" to miss 6-10 weeks, which would include the first 4-8 weeks of the regular season.
Ian Raport of the NFL Network reports that the "best-case scenario" is Romo will be back "by mid-season."
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that he was told Romo will be out "beyond" Week 1.
The injury came on the third snap of the game against the Seahawks. Romo was hit from behind and immediately grabbed his back before being taken out of the game.

Romo lobbied to be put back in the game but the Cowboys decided against it.
Later in the game, when asked about the status of Romo, owner Jerry Jones said, Romo "is not injured."
The Cowboys have a bye in Week 7 this season.
