10 things in tech you need to know today
1. Google has a brand new logo. Its "flat" sans-serif look fits with the material design aesthetic that Google launched with Android Lollipop in 2014
2. More than 250,000 "jailbroken" iPhones in at least 18 different countries have had their Apple account logins hacked. These are phones that people have modified to install apps not available in the App Store.
3. Swedish payments startup Klarna is launching in the US. The company will start working with ten American retailers including Overstock.com.
4. Apple Pay users can now make purchases of up to £30 in the UK. The limit for contactless payments using Apple Pay was previously £20.
5. A San Francisco judge has ruled that the jobs of Uber drivers in California are similar enough that workers can sue the company as a class. If the lawsuit prevails, many of California's 160,000 current and former Uber drivers could be reclassified as employees rather than independent contractors.
6. Amazon is going to start letting Prime users download movies and TV shows on their smartphone or tablet for offline viewing. It's a streaming perk Netflix has said it would never allow.
7. Music discovery app Shazam lost £25 million in 2014. Shazam has more users than Spotify and Apple Music combined, but suffered the biggest net loss in its history over the 12 months of 2014.
8. Former Beats CEO Ian Rogers is leaving Apple for luxury conglomerate LMVH. Rogers will move to Paris to be the company's chief digital officer.
9. Motorola is going to announce the new Moto 360 smartwatch a day before Apple's big event. The announcement is set for September 8.
10. A former HP employee sent a letter to US government officials after being laid off by the company asking for an intervention. Many employees are not happy that they are being asked to choose between becoming contractors with no benefits or being fired without severance.
