A German organisation that helps refugees reported on Wednesday that a 24-year-old Syrian died after waiting for an appointment in the cold in front of the Berlin State Office for Health and Social Affairs.

The association, "Moabit hilft" stated on social media that the man, who has not yet been named, fell ill after waiting in the cold for four days.

The organisation shared a post on Twitter saying: "We are mourning you. You were 24 years old. You were from Syria. You survived so much. You did not survive the LAGeSo (German abbreviation for the State Office for Health and Social Affairs). You got a fever, shivering fits, cardiac arrest. You died last night. We are crying."

The exact background surrounding the refugee's death are still unclear as the organisation's claims are currently being investigated. According to German news site rbb, the police are not yet aware of a death in a hospital that matches the description, but hospitals only notify police in cases of unnatural deaths.

A spokesman for the Department for Health and Social Services told German news site Spiegel Online they had no confirmation that a refugee had died during the night.
