When Apple CEO Tim Cook said he sees India as a bright spot he meant every word of it. Now, the iPhone maker is making another bid to capture the Indian market and this time it is Mac computers.
Apple wants to penetrate smaller Indian towns with its Mac computers through neighbourhood electronics stores.
India features in top 10 markets for Mac and nowApple wants to invest more and double its distribution reach from present 75 cities in next 2-3 years.
"India is one of the few markets where Apple has 8-9% share in just the consumer PC segment, with the Mac business revenue growing at over 100% in the last few years making it one of the promising category in the country after iPhones," one of the persons in the know-how told ET.
Presently, Mac is sold through franchisee-run exclusive Apple stores, online marketplaces and large retail chains.
"Since Apple's base is small, Mac shipments are up by 50% year-on-year. However, it has a commanding presence in premium segment with competition still playing a catch up game," Gartner research director Vishal Tripathi told ET.
As per IDC, Apple is a leader in the $1,000-plus computer segment in India with 32.7% share during the January-March quarter.
