7 out of 10 employers are looking to hire apprentices: TeamLease survey

A survey by Teamlease reveals that 77% of employers in India across different sectors are likely to increase their apprentice engagement in the July-December period as compared to the first half of the year.

This percentage was at 72% in the January-June period, according to Apprenticeship Outlook report.

More than half of employers who want to engage apprentices – at 51% – cite business growth as the top driving factor for this decision. On the other hand, 72% of the employers who are not seeking to hire say that apprentices are less productive than expected.

“Over the past couple of years, there has been significant progress in the adoption of apprenticeships in India. As businesses see stronger return on investments, more employers are looking to leverage apprenticeships as the key source of talent,” said Sumit Kumar, chief business officer, TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship.

Electrical & electronics records the highest Net Apprenticeship Outlook (NAO) at 92% for H2, followed by aerospace & aviation at 88%; and engineering & industrial at 87%.

NAO is the proportion of employers likely to increase the engagement of apprentices during H2 as compared to H1 minus the proportion of employers likely to decrease the engagement of apprentices during the same period.

Beauty and wellness sector too is keen on apprentices as its NAO stood at 75% and that of travel and hospitality is at 70%.

Pune to hire the most apprentices in India


As per the report, Pune has the highest NAO of 80% in H2, an increase of 37% as compared to H1. This is followed by Hyderabad and Kochi.

Kolkata, Chandigarh and Lucknow have the lowest NAO, as per the report.

“As per our report, non-metro cities have witnessed a surge in the adoption of apprenticeship as compared to metro cities. Pune tops the NAO chart followed by Kochi and Coimbatore,” Kumar added.

NAO of medium sized businesses have reportedly been higher at 72%, an increase of 14% in H2. Small businesses and large businesses have NAO of 70% and 65% respectively.

“Small businesses are the most optimistic and report a doubling of NAO for Jul-Dec 2022, to 70% up from 32%,” says the report.
