Wine shops in Delhi are selling way below MRP to stop people from going to Gurugram

Delhi government’s latest excise policy — which allowed liquor vendors to adopt competitive pricing policy — has enabled liquor shop owners to offer much bigger discounts to their customers.

Liquor vendors in the national capital are offering discounts ranging between 30-40% on Indian as well as imported alcohol brands. Offering the same discounts was barred in the previous regime, media reports suggest.

In certain cases, the alcohol rates in Delhi are cheaper than both Gurugram and Noida. A bottle of Glenlivet’s 18 year old batch is now being sold at ₹5,115, a discount of ₹2,300 from its previous maximum retail price (MRP).

Under the new policy, the Delhi government had fixed the price of 166 brands of whiskey, 154 wines, 65 beer and 55 vodka. The vendors are allowed to sell liquor below the MRP but not above it.

The government is also looking to set up 849 mall-like liquor stores with walk-in facilities across the national capital. The new liquor policy, which was implemented in November 2021, also allowed the sale of alcohol at restaurants.
