How to celebrate Diwali and perform Lakshmi Puja

On the day of Diwali, the main event is Lakshmi puja. However, Diwali is celebrated in different ways and in various flavours across India.

In many parts of India, people wake up early in the morning and take a bath - which is referred to as Ganga Snan. The puja altar is set up and lamps are lit. New clothes, currency coins, gold ornaments, sweets and other offerings are placed in front of the altar.

Mantras of Lord Ganesh, Lakshmi and Vishnu are chanted. After the puja, people wear new clothes, eat sweets and get indulged with the crackers. Usually, people burst crackers during the daytime and fireworks are reserved for the late evening hours. However, there are some local regulations governing the use of crackers which must be adhered to.

On Diwali, Lakshmi puja is performed in the evening after sunset. Prepare the main altar in your puja room. Set up the pictures or idols of Ganesh and Lakshmi. Decorate them with flowers, sandal paste, and vermilion. Light lamp and incense sticks. Place some coins and gold on a plate and place it in front of the altar. Chant the names, slokas and songs of Ganesh and Lakshmi. Offer the special dishes prepared for the puja including Modak, Halwa, Puri, Kheer, and others to the deities. Do arati and conclude the puja. Distribute the prasad to the family members and other attendees.
