Gujarat logs highest single-day spike of 783 COVID-19 cases

Ahmedabad, Jul 8 () Gujarat reported 783 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, the highest single-day spike, taking the count to 38,419, while the death toll inched towards the 2,000-mark, the state health department said.

The state reported the death of 16 more coronavirus patients, most of them in Ahmedabad and Surat, taking the total fatalities to 1,995, it said.

Also, 569 more patients were discharged from hospitals, pushing up the number of recovered cases in the state to 27,313, the health department said.

Surat continued to top the list of districts reporting coronavirus cases, overtaking Ahmedabad by a large margin with 273 new cases recorded on Wednesday, taking its tally to 7,274.

Ahmedabad reported 156 new cases, raising its tally to 22,418, the health department said.

With 67 new cases, Vadodara's tally rose to 2,763.

Among other districts, Rajkot reported 39 new cases, followed by Valsad at 27, Bhavnagar 19, Dahod 18, Bharuch and Surendranagar 16 each, Mehsana and Banaskantha 15 each, and Gandhinagar and Kheda 11 each, among others, the health department said in a release.

Out of the death of 16 COVID-19 patients, Ahmedabad and Surat reported five deaths each, followed by Rajkot at three, and Amreli, Jamnagar and Morbi at one each.

As many as 170 patients were dischargedin Ahmedabad, and 181 in Surat, the department said.

With this, the number of recovered cases in Ahmedabad rose to 17,363, while in Surat, it increased to 4,264.

There are now 9,111 active cases in Gujarat, of which the condition of 67 patients is critical, while that of the remaining 9,044 is stable, the health department said.
