Whenever I get a chance to test a new KidKraft product, like the Mid-Century Kid Toddler Table and 2 Chair Set, I expect it to live up to my high expectations for the brand.

In testing, the Mid-Century Kid Toddler Table and 2 Chair Set easily met my standards. Assembly was fast and resulted in a table and chair set that is extremely sturdy and visually appealing. If that weren't enough, the table also has a built-in storage area so I can quickly sweep away any clutter.

Whether you follow the Montessori method and are looking for a high-quality table to encourage independence or you just want something that doesn't clash with your décor, this mid-century kids' table set has it all.

Design and assembly

KidKraft nailed the aesthetic of mid-century design, which is known for its clean lines and subtle curves. The oval table is made of natural-looking wood with a pop of color in the center. Kids can choose the blue or white side on a reversible oval lid that covers the mesh storage bin.

The chairs also have rounded edges on both the seats and chair backs so there aren't any sharp corners. The chairs' seats are white while the chair and table legs continue the natural wood look. The white on the chairs complements the natural wood very well.

I was a bit hesitant to try an oval table, thinking it wouldn't fit neatly in our space. Surprisingly, it takes up less room than the square table my daughter had been using. The chairs on the Mid-Century Kid Toddler Table slide completely under the tabletop when not in use, saving even more space. The table measures 79 by 51 by 48 inches and the set weighs about 21 pounds in total.

Assembling this compact table was very simple and took less than 15 minutes — even with my 2-year-old "helping." The table and chairs are mostly made of wood, but a few parts are plastic. All of the legs screw in, and to finish it off, each chair requires two screws that go in easily with the included Allen wrench.

What it's like to use

It's called a toddler table, but the recommended age range is 3 to 6 years old, which leans more toward older toddlers and kids who have graduated from toddlerhood. The chairs are a tad big for younger or shorter toddlers. Their feet might not reach the ground, but that also means they have room to grow and will be able to enjoy the set for years.

My daughter is currently 33 inches tall, and she can easily get on and off the chairs independently, but her feet don't yet touch the ground when she's sitting.

What makes it stand out

Show me a product that keeps my home organized and clutter-free and I'm all over it. While my daughter likes that she can store her art supplies or small toys in the center bin, I like that it's easy to clean whatever is on the table with a single arm swipe.

The storage area is a modest size. It won't fit larger toys, but it's ideal for smaller objects like crayons, markers, or blocks. I was able to fit about 70 Lego Duplo blocks in the storage area.

The cons

The set's smooth surfaces wipe down well, although there are quite a few nooks and crannies that could make cleaning major spills difficult. Because of the storage area in the middle, spills can find their way in there as well, which means you would also need to clean whatever is in the storage area. Craft materials like Play-Doh or glue can get stuck in the cracks of the center storage area as well.

The bottom line

Kids, especially toddlers, revel in their own independence, which is why they enjoy having a table just their size. As a parent, it makes my life easier when I can set up a craft or snack for my daughter at her own table that she can use independently. I don't need to help her up or down, and it keeps any sticky messes off my dining room table.

Because big spills or messy crafts can find their way into the center bin, you might prefer the Melissa and Doug Wooden Table and 3 Chair Set ($130), which doesn't have storage in the center.
