One person is dead and two people are injured following a shooting inside a Long Island grocery store on Tuesday, the Nassau County Police Department said on Facebook.

The shooting happened at a Stop & Shop grocery store in West Hempstead, New York. The department initially announced an active shooter situation just after 12 p.m. Tuesday and said on Twitter three hours later that the suspect was apprehended and placed in custody.

The department previously announced on Facebook the person of interest in the case was 30-year-old Gabriel DeWitt Wilson.

NBC New York reported Wilson was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon after a four-hour manhunt. He is believed to have fled the scene of the shooting with a handgun and one law enforcement source told the outlet he could have taken a nearby bus.

It wasn't immediately clear if Wilson had direct ties to the grocery store. Stop & Shop did not immediately return Insider's request for comment.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder told CBS New York that a 49-year-old store employee was confirmed as a victim of the shooting. The outlet reported a statement from the grocery store said the company was "shocked and heartbroken" after the incident.

"Our hearts go out to the families of the victims, our associates, customers and the first responders who have responded heroically to this tragic situation," the statement said. "At this time, we are cooperating fully with local law enforcement on the investigation. The store will remain closed until further notice, and we appreciate the Long Island community's support during this difficult time."

The shooting came less than one month after a gunman killed 10 people on March 22 in a Boulder, Colorado grocery store. Ahmad Alissa, 21, has since been charged with 10 counts of murder.
