A Glynn County, Georgia, Grand Jury met Wednesday morning to hear the case against three men who have been arrested on charges related to the killing of Ahmaud Arbery, a Black man who was shot dead while jogging in February.

After hearing a presentation of facts that lasted about an hour and a half, the Grand Jury convened for about 10 minutes before returning an indictment.

The indictment charges Greg McMichael, Travis McMichael, and William "Roddie" Bryan with nine counts: malice murder; four counts of felony murder; two counts of aggravated assault; false imprisonment; and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment, Cobb County District Attorney Joyette Holmes, who was specially appointed to oversee the Arbery case, said at a press conference Wednesday.

"This is another positive step, another great step for finding justice for Ahmaud, for finding justice for this family and the community beyond," Holmes said.

Ahmaud Arbery, 25, went out for a jog in a Georgia neighborhood on February 23.

Gregory McMichael and his son Travis McMichael told police they believed Arbery was a burglary suspect so they grabbed two guns and followed him in a pickup truck.

When they approached him, a scuffle occurred. The men shot Arbery during the altercation and he later died of his wounds.

The McMichaels weren't arrested on charges related to the killing until two months after Arbery's death, when a graphic video that showed the killing surfaced and was widely shared on the internet.

They were arrested on murder and aggravated assault charges in early May.

The man who filmed the killing, William "Roddie" Bryan, was arrested several days later on charges of felony murder and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment.

Holmes said during her press conference Wednesday that her office immediately called Arbery's family after the indictment was returned and they were ecstatic that the Grand Jury was able to convene so quickly.

The McMichaels and Bryan are still being held without bail.

The recent killings of several Black men and women — including Arbery — have sparked international anti-racism protests.
