"It's an honor to be with you," Trump said at the start of the bilateral sit-down. Putin replied that he was "delighted to meet" Trump, according to a translation.

The two presidents posed for photos before beginning the private meeting around 10 a.m. ET Friday. Joining them were US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and two translators.

Trump's official meeting with Putin will take place amid crumbling US-Russia relations. The president faces investigations by Congress and the FBI into Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether the Trump campaign played a role in it.

According to a pool report, Trump ignored a question about whether Trump planned to raise Russia's election meddling with Putin.
