Maruti Crosses 1 Lakh Mark After Good Sales In May

India's largest car-maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) reported 19.2% rise in total sales in May to 1,00,925 units as against 84,677 units in the same month last year.

The car-maker said its domestic sales surged 16.4% during the month to 90,560 units as against 77,821 units in May 2013.

In its filings with the stock exchanges, Maruti reported that the sales of mini segment cars, including M800, Alto, A-Star and WagonR, declined by 7.5% to 29,068 units as compared to 31,427 units in the year-ago month.

But the compact segment, where Maruti has Swift, Estilo and Ritz models, recorded a 53.9% jump in sales to 26,394 units in May this year compared with 17,147 vehicles during May 2013.

MSI said sales of its popular compact sedan Dzire registered a 9.8% growth during the month under review to 18,953 units as against 17,265 units in May last year.

Maruti's mid-sized sedan SX4 recorded a drop of 75.9% to 121 units as against 503 units in the same month in 2013. There was no sale of premium sedan Kizashi during the month.

In the utility vehicles segment (Gypsy, Grand Vitara and Ertiga), sales increased 22% to 5,253 units in May this year (4,307 units in the same month in 2013) and sales of vans with Omni and Eeco models, zoomed 50.2% to 10,771 units ( 7,172 vehicles).

Exports during the month rose 51.2% to 10,365 units as compared to 6,856 units in May last year, the statement added.
