LONDON - European Council President Donald Tusk has accused Boris Johnson of a "stupid blame game" as tensions between the United Kingdom government and European Union approach boiling point.

Tusk criticised the UK prime minister in a tweet directed at him on Tuesday morning.

Relations between Johnson's UK government and the EU appeared to hit a new low on Tuesday after an anonymous Downing Street source accused Brussels of not wanting to negotiate a new deal in a blistering statement.

Johnson last week revealed his proposals for managing the Irish border after the UK leaves the EU.

However, the EU said it could not accept the proposals in their current form, and has told Johnson's UK government to revise its proposals.
