Protests against Donald Trump have spread to several major cities across the US, a day after Trump won the presidential election.

Demonstrators in New York City, Chicago, the San Francisco Bay Area, Washington D.C., and Detroit have hit the streets Wednesday night, chanting "Not my president," and calling out Trump who ran a campaign they say was fueled by racism, xenophobia, and sexism.

In New York, a throng of thousands began the protest at Union Square and marched up Broadway toward Trump Tower, stopping rush hour traffic in its place. The mass of people spanned more than 40 city blocks.

Crowds broke out into dozens of anti-Trump chants, including "Love trumps hate," and "P---y grabs back."

Protesters in San Francsico also numbered in the thousands, holding signs that showed messages like "Trump says go back," a reference to immigrants that the soon-t0-be president has demonized on the campaign trail, "We say fight back. No to racism, sexism, war."
