The first set of flash floods in Assam continued to worsen on May 27 after one person lost his life and nearly three lakh people suffered in the deluge across 11 districts.

Around 2.72 lakh people have been affected due to the floods in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Hojai, Darrang, Barpeta, Nalbari, Goalpara, West Karbi Anglong, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts, Assam State Disaster Management Authority said. Goalpara is the worst-hit district in the state with at least 2.15 lakh people affected, followed by Nalbari with over 22,000 people hit and Nagaon with nearly 11,000 people bearing the brunt of the natural calamity.

Currently, the Brahmaputra river — which starts in the Himalayas and empties into the Bay of Bengal — is flowing above the danger mark at Nimatighat in Jorhat.

NDRF has also distributed 172.53 quintals of rice, dal, salt and 804.42 litres of mustard oil along with tarpaulin and other essential items.The authorities are running 57 relief camps and distribution centres across five districts where at least 16,720 people are taking shelter.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal reviewed the situation on Wednesday and ordered all officials to ensure that all COVID-19 protocols such as social distancing, hand washing and the wearing of masks were being maintained at the flood relief camps.
