The Indian Army is evacuating as many as 7,000 people to 12 relief camps in who live near Assam’s Baghjan oil well — which has been "uncontrollably" spewing gas for the last 15 days. The Baghjan Field was drilled in 2006 by Oil India Limited (OIL) and exploded on May 27 resulting in thick plumes of black smoke shooting into the sky.

The smoke of the massive fire can be seen in areas 30 km away from the blazing well and is posing a serious threat to the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park. Two firefighters of public sector major OIL were found dead in a wetland abutting the site of a major blaze at its Baghjan well.The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel recovered the bodies with the help of drones used by the Forest Department of the Assam government.

According to OIL, the fire has been controlled in a 1.5-km radius but it is still raging as the "uncontrollable" natural gas is being fed by the well's oil.
