  • Experts recommend adults get a minimum of seven hours of sleep.
  • Over one-third of Americans aren't sleeping enough, per The United Health Foundation.

They say New York never sleeps, and whoever "they" are might be onto something. Sure, they were talking about the city, but over a third of adults in New York state report getting fewer than seven hours of sleep a night — and they're not alone.

On average, 35.5% of American adults report sleeping fewer than seven hours a day, America's Health Rankings' analysis of 2022 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data found.

Seven is the minimum number of hours recommended for adults by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Ideally, people over the age of 18 should sleep between seven and nine hours a night to help prevent health issues like cancer, heart attacks, and depression.

Beyond work, family, and other responsibilities, factors that may impact sleep include exercising too late at night, caffeine and alcohol intake, and looking at screens too close to bedtime.

According to America's Health Rankings' analysis, here are the 10 states getting the least amount of sleep based on the percentage of adults there who report getting less than seven hours a day.
