Meta-owned messaging app WhatsApp is continuing to add safety layers. Since the app was born, it has allowed users to login with a mobile phone number. Now, it has started testing a new feature which allows users to link their email with their WhatsApp account. Mind you, this follows security features which have been recently added like Chat Lock, Device Verification etc.

The ability to add your email to your WhatsApp account adds a verification layer to the app, allowing you to use it for account authentication in addition to your mobile number, which was the only option earlier.

This feature will likely come in handy when your cellular network coverage is poor or unavailable.

  • Open WhatsApp on your phone and click on your picture to open settings.
  • Now, click on “Account” and then click on “Email address”.
  • Then, enter your email address and click on “Next”.
  • Enter the six-digit OTP received on your email and submit.
That’s all you need to do to link your email with your WhatsApp account. The next time you are looking to sign in to your WhatsApp account, you can also receive the six-digit OTP on your email in addition to your number.

Do note that you can use any email to link your account and you don’t have to use the email you are using to back up your data.

This does not mean that you can create a new account just with an email, without having to verify your phone number. Your number is still the primary login method.
