A Carnival Cruise Line employee went overboard on Thursday, a Carnival representative told Business Insider.

"The ship's command immediately returned to the location where the crew member was last seen and initiated search and rescue activities, which are ongoing," the Carnival representative said. "All appropriate authorities, including the United States Coast Guard, have been notified."

The US Coast Guard sent a cutter ship and aircraft to search for the Carnival employee. Other ships were also alerted about the employee's disappearance.

The 37-year-old male employee, a crew member on the Carnival Victory, went overboard 30 miles northwest of Cuba as the Victory was heading back to Miami, the Miami Herald reported.

The Victory was on the final leg of a four-day cruise that began on Monday, the Carnival representative said.

The US Coast Guard did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
