Football fans raised a collective eyebrow after Russia scored the first goal of the 2018 World Cup just minutes into its opening match against Saudi Arabia, and the camera quickly cutting to the leaders of the two countries shaking hands in the stands.

  • The 2018 World Cup kicked off on Thursday with the opening match between Russia and Saudi Arabia.
  • After Russia scored the first goal of the tournament, president Vladimir Putin gave Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman a shrug and a handshake that was captured by cameras.
  • Twitter was quick to react to the interaction, imagining the possible conversations surrounding the handshake.

The 2018 World Cup kicked off on Thursday with Russia beating Saudi Arabia, 5-0, in the opening match.

While the rest of the tournament will be filled with iconic and memorable moments on the pitch, it's likely that the lasting image from the opening game of the tournament will be the shrug and consequent handshake Russian president Vladimir Putin gave Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman after the first goal of the game.

Just 12 minutes into the match, the Saudi backline got caught out of place after a corner kick, leaving a wide open opportunity for Yury Gazinsky to score the opening goal of the tournament.

The goal was a great start to the tournament for the host nation, but the moment that had everyone talking took place in the immediate aftermath, when cameras caught the now infamous interaction between the Russian president and Crown Prince, starting with a shrug, followed by a sympathetic handshake.

Naturally, Twitter was quick to get its jokes off.

There's plenty of football left to be played before a winner is declared in Russia, but there's a chance the most memorable image of the tournament has already been captured.

Russia would go on to win the match 5-0 over Saudi Arabia.
