  • Wayne Rooney has fired back at his fiercest critics by hitting a glorious quarterback-style pass that led to a stunning DC United goal on Sunday.
  • Rooney tracked back to complete a tackle in his own half, dribbled the ball into the attacking third, and placed a perfectly-weighted ball into the penalty box for teammate Luciano Costa to head into goal.
  • The goal was struck in the last minute of the game and saw DC United beat Orlando City 3-2.
  • Watch the goal below.

Wayne Rooney has had to fend off criticism that he is over-the-hill, past his sell-by date, and that he needs the MLS more than the MLS needs him.

But in just six MLS appearances, the DC United forward has already begun to justify his transfer fee and three-and-a-half year deal.

In a 47-second Sports Center clip that has swiftly gone viral, Rooney can be seen tracking back to complete a well-timed slide tackle in his own half, dribbling the ball into the attacking third, and hitting a quarterback-style pass that was perfectly placed in the penalty box for teammate Luciano Costa to head into the goal.

It was a glorious move that will likely be replayed over and over, and it was made even sweeter as it ensured DC United secured a last-minute winner in the 3-2 victory over Orlando City in the MLS on Sunday.

Watch for yourself right here:

Rooney has made four starts and two substitute appearances since transferring to DC United, but has already tallied three assists and one goal for his new club.

DC United is currently 11th in the Eastern Conference and desperately needs points to climb the table. The team is next in action on Thursday when it plays Portland.
