Nestled away behind new features like colored titlebars and upgrades to Cortana are a handful of features that will finaly make Windows 10 way more usable to the business customers who generate most of Microsoft's sales.
"With this free update we have reached the point in the platform's maturity where we can confidently recommend Windows 10 deployment to whole organizations," writes Microsoft Windows Boss Terry Myerson in a blog post.
The new features:
- Windows Update for Business is a way for companies to control who gets which updates to the operating system, when. Enterprises need this feature to do staggered rollouts of Windows 10 updates, taking into account the bandwidth of their network and security needs.
- Windows Store for Business is an app store for the enterprise user, letting companies list both the official Windows apps and the custom business apps. Companies can either force apps onto the appropriate users, or just make a whole bunch of options available for employees to download.
- Mobile Device Management means that Windows 10 now integrates with software (like Microsoft's own Enterprise Mobility Suite) that lets IT departments manage the devices that people bring into work. It means that IT pros can now manage Windows 10 tablets, PC, et cetera, in the same way that they manage the iPhones that employees bring from home.
- Azure Active Directory Join is a feature that lets enterprise users bring their Windows 10 settings and data with them no matter where they log in on a network.
When Windows 10 first dropped, it was very much focused on the consumer, with Microsoft very much focused on getting home PC users to take the plunge.
Now, Microsoft is ready to start pushing it to the enterprises - an important step on its mission of getting to a billion devices on Windows 10 within the next few years.
