People are freaking out because WHSmith is accidentally emailing customer contact details to other customers

This morning many WHSmith customers started receiving hundreds of emails containing personal details for the company's other customers. It appears that every time someone uses WHSmith's contact form their message is then sent to its entire mailing list.

Some of the early emails contained sensitive information like full names, addresses, and telephone numbers.

It's not clear whether this is due to a virus or whether the company has been hacked, but it has yet to be properly dealt with. WHSmith has only hidden the contact form, not removed it.

When people started to realise what was happening, they went to the company's contact form to make a complaint. But this meant that customers received copies of those emails too.

While some people are understandably worried that their personal information is being sent to the inboxes of hundreds of strangers, others are using the bug to send very public messages to friends, family, and WHSmith itself.

Some customers have managed to get through to WHSmith but are still receiving the emails.

We have reached out to WHSmith and will update this as the story develops.
